The original goal

In the 2016 Champions League group stage, Mesut Özil scored for Arsenal away at Ludogorets with one of the calmest finishes you’ll see. The keeper rushed out, Özil lifted the ball over him, went round him and took it on the bounce. Then, with the goal empty, he stopped. Two defenders raced back and threw themselves into slides on the line. He waited, let both of them slide past, and rolled the ball into the net.

Fans have replayed it for years. Ten years on, it became a trend.

The 2026 TikTok trend

In October 2026, people started putting themselves into the goal with AI. The idea is simple: you take Özil’s place, usually in whatever you happen to be wearing, and score it under the floodlights. The posts run under #mesutozilai.

Most of the trend is made with a CapCut template, and many of the top posts are tutorials for it. We looked at public #mesutozilai posts on 14 October 2026: the top one had about 870,000 plays, and most others had somewhere between a few hundred and 18,000. That’s our own count on one day, so treat it as a snapshot.

What the AI version looks like

A good Ozil goal AI video keeps the beats of the original and swaps the scorer for you. Ours runs 15 seconds, vertical:

  1. 0:00: you run onto a through ball as the keeper rushes out.
  2. 0:02: you chip it over the keeper with the outside of the boot.
  3. 0:04: you go round the keeper and take it on the bounce.
  4. 0:07: you wait as two defenders slide past into the net.
  5. 0:12: you roll it into the empty net and turn to the crowd with arms wide.

Tools make it in different ways. Some edit real match footage and swap the player in. Others generate the whole scene from scratch. TryOzilGoalAI does the second: a floodlit night match in a generic stadium, plain kits with no badges and nobody’s face but yours. The model makes the sound too: crowd, ball and net, with no commentary and no music.
